Follistatin is recognized for its ability to inhibit activin. This protein is critically involved in cellular growth within the body. An overproduction of activin can result in uncontrolled cellular proliferation, potentially leading to cancer. By inhibiting activin, follistatin helps regulate the cellular growth associated with it. Follistatin binds to activin, forming an inactive complex that prevents activin from promoting proliferation.
